There is continued growth in the number of patients requiring long-term mechanical ventilation, mainly due to a rise in the number of people suffering from chronic diseases. This is partly resulting from changing demographics and advances in medical technology. Some of these patients require invasive ventilation (IV) and some require non-invasive ventilation (NIV). IV in particular is a highly complex undertaking, often requiring patients to remain in an intensive care unit (ICU). ICUs however, are not designed for prolonged stays and offer limited rehabilitative therapies. This highlights a gap in the care continuum for ventilated patients.
Bridging the gap
REMEO® is Linde Healthcare’s innovative programme for long-term mechanically ventilated patients, offering an integrated care path that bridges the gap between a hospital’s ICU and a patient’s home.
Integrated care path
To accommodate the full care continuum, REMEO® provides an integrated, standardised clinical pathway reflecting various levels of complexity of care. Equipped with all the technology, medical staff and specialists necessary for ventilation care and rehabilitation, REMEO® centres provide a comfortable, home-like environment for patients, family members and friends.
Enhancing quality of life
Ideally, patients will eventually be able to live without any ventilation assistance. Building on our global commitment to excellence in long-term mechanical ventilation care, at REMEO® we combine (medical) expertise, therapeutic skills and clinical care to help reduce patient ventilator dependency. Patients requiring continuous mechanical ventilation can remain at a REMEO® centre, maintaining a high quality of life in a home-like environment.
In addition, ventilation care provided at home can enable patients to achieve greater independence and an improved quality of life, with the added advantage of reduced exposure to common hospital infections.
Dedicated medical and clinical care
Individual care and weaning plans are developed to help patients reduce their dependency on many levels (this process is known as weaning). Where mechanical ventilation weaning is not feasible, REMEO® nonetheless, ensures optimum quality of life for long-term ventilated patients, where possible helping them to return to a home setting. To ease the transition, REMEO® centres also offer family caregivers the opportunity to receive training in ventilation care in order to prepare for a patient’s return home. REMEO® staff continue to support patients who successfully transition to the home with a variety of dedicated homecare services.
